Travel insurance is something you should never leave your own country without (and your passport, of course).
But here’s the catch:
Most travel insurance is pricey and demands a large number of facts just to receive a quotation. They also lack the genuine customer service required to feel confident in purchasing a policy from them.
Are you ready for some exciting news?
Digital nomads, remote professionals, and full-time travelers will find SafetyWing Nomads Insurance to be an ideal answer. It provides adequate travel medical coverage, allowing you to go practically anyplace in the globe without anxiety.
In this SafetyWing review, we will go under the hood of SafetyWing and see what it has to offer. I’ll explain why it differs from other travel insurance firms on the market so you can disregard the hoopla and determine whether it’s good for you.
Are you ready to begin?
Let’s get started with the SafetyWing review!
What Exactly Is SafetyWing?
SafetyWing is a travel insurance company designed exclusively for digital nomads, travelers, and expats living abroad.
SafetyWing was founded in 2018 and has swiftly grown to become one of the largest suppliers of digital nomad travel insurance, with over 100,000 clients traveling in over 150 countries. Simply told, there are a lot of individuals that use SafetyWing today!
SafetyWing has gained popularity for three reasons:
- Excellent value for money
- Outstanding marketing
- Excellent worldwide insurance coverage
SafetyWing provides a new, online-only solution to travel insurance that makes its competitors appear to be dinosaurs. SafetyWing secured $35 million in a series B financing in 2022 to continue developing and helping digital nomads, tourists, and expats throughout the world.
The firm was started in Norway and is currently based in Palo Alto, California. SafetyWing is underwritten by Lloyd’s and is in partnership with World Trips.

Who Can SafetyWing Protect?
SafetyWing has worked hard to ensure that as many individuals as possible are covered.
So, who can SafetyWing protect?
The quick answer is practically everyone from almost anyplace on the planet. SafetyWing provides insurance to persons aged 15 days to 69 years old.
They will not be able to provide insurance if you are 70 or older. The same goes for newborns less than 14 days old.
What is the price of SafetyWing? (Price List)
SafetyWing has some of the most affordable prices in the market, with plans beginning at $45.08 per month (for people aged 10 to 39).
This is one of the most affordable options for dependable travel insurance with considerable flexibility. The price you pay each month is ultimately determined by your age and whether or not you wish to get travel insurance coverage in the United States.
The price table below illustrates how much a SafetyWing insurance subscription costs every four weeks (28 days):
Age Range | Worldwide – EXCLUDES U.S | Worldwide – INCLUDES U.S |
10 to 39 | $45.08 USD | $83.44 USD |
40 to 49 | $73.92 USD | $127.48 USD |
50 to 59 | $115.92 USD | $226.24 USD |
60 to 64 | $157.36 USD | $308.84 USD |
65 to 69 | $157.36 USD | $308.84 USD |
As may be seen…
When coverage in the United States is included, the cost of SafetyWing Insurance nearly doubles for all age categories. If you want to visit the United States, keep this in mind.
Most SafetyWings plans have the same deductible and claim cap. These are as follows:
- $250 deductible per certificate term
- Maximum Claim Allowance: $250,000
The lone exception is for persons aged 65 to 69. You get an overall maximum limit of $100,000.
It’s also worth noting that SafetyWing’s Global coverage excludes a few nations that it doesn’t cover at all. These are the countries:
- Korea, North
- Cuba
- Iran
While North Korea, Cuba, and Iran are unlikely to be on most people’s bucket lists for travel or digital nomad locations, SafetyWing will not provide insurance while in those countries.
What is the scope of SafetyWing?
I want to be as open and honest as possible in my SafetyWing review.
To make things easier, I’ve divided the SafetyWing insurance features into Medical and Travel.
Medical Insurance Advantages
SafetyWing provides a comprehensive set of medical insurance features.
The following are the medical benefits of SafetyWing Nomad insurance:
Medical Benefits | Coverage |
Maximum Coverage Limit | $250,000 (Age 65-69: $100,000) |
Deductible | $250 per certificate period |
Hospital & Ambulance | Up to the overall maximum limit |
Emergency Dental | Up to $1,000. Not subject to deductible |
Outpatient Physical Therapy & Chiropractic Care | Up to $50 per day |
Emergency Eye Exam | Up to $150 |
Acute Onset Of Pre-Existing Conditions (Excludes chronic and congenital conditions) | Up to the overall maximum limit. Up to $25,000 lifetime maximum for Emergency Medical |
Terrorism | Up to $50,000 lifetime maximum |
Bedside Visit | Up to $1,500 |
Emergency Medical Evacuation | Up to $100,000 lifetime maximum |
All Other Eligible Medical Expenses | Up to the overall maximum limit |
SafetyWing offers a wide choice of emergency medical insurance. While the maximum limit isn’t the greatest, the coverage is enough.
For us, this medical coverage works great. Especially when you consider the money you are actually paying each month.
That might not be enough for some folks. PassportCard Nomads or Genki Insurance are two options.
Hospitals and ambulances
SafetyWing hospital coverage comprises an average semi-private room, as well as nurse services. You are covered up to the maximum extent of your plan for critical care services.
When you require an ambulance owing to sickness or injury necessitating hospitalization, you are compensated for reasonable expenses.
Emergency Dental
Up to $1,000 in emergency dental care (including pain management) is covered. This is not subject to SafetyWings deductible.
The term “emergency dental” refers to abrupt, acute pain or damage caused by an accident that necessitates quick care. When you are in extreme pain, you must get care within 24 hours.
Regular dental treatment and checkups are not covered.
Chiropractic Care and Outpatient Physical Therapy
Outpatient physical and chiropractic therapy are covered up to $50 per day. To be covered, it must be ordered in advance by a physician. Therapy must also be required to continue rehabilitation from an injury or disease covered by the insurance.
Emergency Eye Exam
You’re covered up to $150 for an emergency eye test. Emergency eye tests are reimbursed if your prescription corrective lenses are lost or damaged as a result of a covered loss and a new pair is necessary.
It does not cover the expense of replacing prescription corrective lenses or contact lenses.
Acute Recurrence of Pre-Existing Conditions
Pre-existing medical issues are often not covered by travel insurance providers, and SafetyWing is no exception.
Nonetheless, you are covered up to a lifetime maximum of $25,000 for acute onset of pre-existing conditions. The coverage is for unexpected and abrupt breakouts or recurrences of pre-existing conditions that fulfill the following criteria:
- Occurs spontaneously and without prior notice, either in the form of medical advice or symptoms; is of brief duration; and progresses swiftly.
- Urgent attention is required.
- To be covered, all of the requirements must be satisfied. You must also seek therapy within 24 hours.
Make care to read the entire SafetyWing policy. You may also contact their support team for further details. This is not something you should play with.
Visit to the Patient’s Bedside
This is a fairly amazing bonus. If you are in the hospital, Safetywing may pay for a one-way ticket for an immediate family member to visit you.
To be eligible for the benefit, you must be admitted to a hospital critical care unit after suffering a life-threatening bodily accident or disease.
Medical Evacuation in an Emergency
When you need to be transferred someplace else to obtain emergency medical treatment, this is referred to as an emergency medical evacuation. For example, a hospital may not be able to treat your injuries, therefore you need to go to a different hospital.
The expense for this is often high. SafetyWing provides up to $100,000 in limited coverage, which can include air transportation if necessary.
Travel Insurance Benefits
Travel insurance is where I believe SafetyWing provides the most value for money.
While comparing different digital nomad insurance firms, you’ll see that the majority of them only cover emergency medical treatment.
The table below illustrates what SafetyWing covers you for on the travel side of your policy:
Travel Benefits | Coverage |
Trip Interruption | Up to $5,000 |
Travel Delay | Up to $100 a day after a 12-hour delay requiring an unplanned overnight stay |
Lost Checked Luggage | Up to $3,000 per certificate period; $500 per item. Up to $6,000 lifetime limit |
Natural Disaster – New place to stay | Up to $100 a day for 5 days |
Political Evacuation | Up to $10,000 lifetime maximum |
Personal Liability | Covered with different lifetime maximums depending on the situation. See below |
Accidental Death & Dismemberment | Covered with different lifetime maximums depending on the situation. |
Lost Or Stolen Passport & Travel Visa | Up to $100 |
Emergency Quarantine Indemnity – COVID-19 | $50 a day for up to 10 days. Strict conditions apply |
The second fantastic thing is that many of these travel advantages don’t need you to pay the deductible. Because SafetyWing’s deductible is $250, this is an excellent value addition.
Let’s conduct a deeper of the travel insurance that SafetyWing offers.
Trip Cancellation & Travel Delays
The interruption of a trip is an intriguing one. The travel interruption coverage is for:
- House destruction after you left your native country due to a fire or harsh weather (greater than 40% damage)
- A parent, spouse, sibling, kid, or grandchild dies.
- After a medical emergency, a doctor declares it is medically essential for you to return home.
It often refers to paying the expense of a one-way economy class ticket or ground transit to your house.
Flight delays are also covered if you incur at least a 12-hour-delay period requiring an unscheduled overnight stay. You’ll receive up to $100 every day for up to two days. The deductible does not apply to trip delays or travel disruptions.
Checked Baggage Is Missing
If your checked luggage is misplaced, you are protected up to $3,000 every certificate term and a lifetime maximum of $6,000 per item.
Up to the rules, you can be compensated a maximum of $500 for each lost item. This is decent without being outstanding. Several airlines will have an insurance that covers you if they lose your luggage anyhow, so you may not need it.
The deductible does not apply to lost checked baggage.
Passport & Travel Visa Lost Or Stolen
If you lose your passport or travel visa, SafetyWing will reimburse you up to $100. To be eligible for this benefit, you must first report it to the police and get a police record.
This is exempt from the deductible.
Personal Liability Protection
Wing provides personal liability coverage for up to-
- Maximum lifetime payout of $25,000
- $25,000 third person injury
- Third-party property worth $25,000
- $2,500 in third-party property
If you become legally obligated to pay policy-covered losses, your personal duty may include legal fees and expenditures. Certain benefits are exempt from the deductible and the overall maximum limit.
The SafetyWing Nomad insurance coverage eliminates personal liability when operating any vehicle, so keep that in mind.
Natural Disasters and Political Exodus
If a natural disaster renders your home uninhabitable, SafetyWing can provide coverage. In this situation, you’ll be paid up to $100 each day for up to 5 days.
You have a lifetime maximum of $10,000 in coverage with political evacuation. There is no deductible for either of these.
Unintentional Death and Dismemberment
You have accidental death and dismemberment coverage with the following maximums:
- $12,500 for the loss of one limb
- Loss of 2 limbs – $25,000
- Lifetime maximum – $25,000
- Death – $25,000
You will choose a beneficiary when you sign up for SafetyWing. This individual will get recompense if you die. Nobody wants to think about it, but make sure you put the appropriate person in charge!
Is SafetyWing compatible with COVID-19?
Yes, SafetyWing does cover COVID-19. They were one of the first travel insurance providers to do so.
You are covered for medically essential therapy and testing. Because the antibody test is not medically essential, it is not covered.
Coverage is the same as for any other disease, as long as you did not get ill before the start date of your coverage and your illness does not fall under any other policy exclusion or limitation.
You are also protected in the event of an emergency quarantine. It must be ordered by a physician or the government. You are insured for $50 each day for up to ten days, and your insurance policy must provide at least 28 days of coverage.
What isn’t Included?
The primary focus of SafetyWing Nomads insurance is on emergency and fundamental travel difficulties.
That’s why I believed a full SafetyWing review would be incomplete until I included some of the important things you AREN’T insured for.
While it’s hard to cover everything, here’s a brief rundown of some of the highlights for us.
Incidents Relating to Alcohol or Drugs
This should nearly go without saying. You will not be covered if you are hurt while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. That’s all there is to it.
Risky Sports Activities
You aren’t insured if you indulge in high-risk activities such as skydiving, bungee jumping, hang-gliding, boxing, rugby ATVs and more.
To be honest with you — SafetyWing doesn’t cover a lot of athletic activities. They have a thorough list of what sports are classified extreme sports in their official policy.
If you have any particular queries, contact their staff.
Pre-Existing Diseases Or General Checkups
As I indicated previously, SafetyWing Nomads is for travel insurance – health insurance. It implies you are only covered for pre-existing conditions as specified in their policy.
You are also not covered for basic medical visits or general exams. And because this is a frequently asked question…
Cancer treatments are not covered by SafetyWing Nomads.
Do you want international health insurance? Check out our digital nomad health insurance guide for information on the finest international health insurance companies.
Trip Cancelations
Trip Cancelation is not covered by SafetyWing. If you have to cancel your vacation, they won’t compensate you for expenditures. Nonetheless, SafetyWing does provide travel interruption coverage.
Currency that has been misplaced or stolen
This is, once again, very ordinary. If you have actual currency that is lost or stolen while traveling, you are not covered under the SafetyWing.
How to Make a SafetyWing Claim
SafetyWing claims function in the same way as other travel insurance companies.
They have a dedicated claims platform to manage everything.
Here is how it works:
You must first decide whether you want to file a medical or travel claim. Following that, you will be prompted to attach the required papers.
Be sure to provide all essential documentation early so that your claim will be processed fast. Within three business days, SafetyWing will send you an email confirming that your claim has been received and is being processed.
How long does it take for SafetyWing to process a claim?
Your claim should take fewer than 45 days to be processed. You will be refunded into your bank account by direct wire transfer if accepted.
Claims take a variable period of time depends on the occurrence and what you are claiming for.
